After all the controversy of the Burger Wars and Soul Food chapters in Judge Dredd mega-epic,The Cursed Earth(Progs61-85,22Apr-7Oct’78)an infuriated Green Giant corn company, insisted that a re-write be made distancing themselves from the evil Green Giant in the Soul Food episode!
Sadly the original cannot be reprinted for copyright reasons..boo!
Dredd in the Cursed Earth!
One of the best-ever Dredd shorts(in my opinion):The Law According To Judge Dredd(Progs474-75,14-21Jun’86)tells the tale of a huge, demented Cursed Earth mutant, who upon finding a Judge Dredd comic(a 3000AD Special, apparently!)decides to base his own system of Justice, out in the Cursed Earth,on the ideals of Mega-City One's top lawman.
However when he meets his hero, the crazed mutant really understands the meaning of Justice!
Best of 2000AD Monthly#73(Oct’91,originally Prog474,14Jun’86).
Gotta love these studies in Lego of,top:Judge Dredd and the Dark Judges by U.S artist Jolyon Yates. And below Mike Carroll's cast of Mega-City One(inc.Mean-Machine Angel!)and the Landraider® vehicle of Judge Dredd mega-epic The Cursed Earth(Progs 61-85,22Apr-7Oct’78).
Taken from Mike’s amazing site,full of 2000AD-related 3D sculpts.
In the future, jaded audiences need more and more extreme shows for their Tri-D sets, recognising this,Oz presenter of “Strewth,What A Loon!”,Chug ‘Chugger' McNasty chases ever more dangerous experiences with which to entertain the viewer.
However when viewer figures drop,Chug journeys to the Cursed Earth to film Mean-Machine Angel;has he finally met his most lethal challenge?
Staggering through the radiation desert beyond Mega-City One,Mean-Machine Angel is “rescued” by Cursed Earth scavengers,Harke and Burr.
Sensing an opportunity, the reprehensible duo take advantage of Mean's disoriented state and make him part of their “Cornucopia of Wonders”,as-the Geek!
Caged, chained, tortured and fed only rad-rat,Mean although still suffering the effects of radiation poisoning,is starting to recall memories of a happier time when his father did the same things to him at their childhood home in the Texas City Radlands!
Also having been brought back to life by Owen Chrysler, the Judge Child(see the Judge Child,Progs156-81,15Mar-11Oct’80)it takes an awful lot to kill the Mean-Machine.
So when the damaged cyborg psychopath catches sight of an old war-droid Mr. Burr had fixed up with spare parts from an old Justice Dept. Mechanismo droid, something snaps inside Mean's mind and he is reminded of his greatest enemy-Judge Dredd.
Bursting out of his cage,Mean-Machine flies at the altered war-droid,delivering a perfect diving head-butt.
When the furious Angel brother realises the robot isn’t Dredd he goes into a ‘butting-frenzy’,totalling Harke and Burr's travelling show, until eventually wandering off into the rad-wastes of the Cursed Earth oncemore.
Mick McMahon is so ‘kin good,he makes most other artists finished pieces, pale into insignificance ,just with his pencil layouts.
Here Judge Dredd kicks arse right the way across the scorched desert known as the Cursed Earth with a vaccine destined to save the lives of the citizens of Mega-City Two;Mega-City One's sister city on the West Coast of what was once America;fighting black Tyrannosaurs, robot armies and other terrible dangers..
He makes it,just!
